Equine: Nutrition

During the past 15 years equine nutrition has blossomed with research and practical applications for long standing problems.  Proper nutrition for pregnant mares, growing horses, and performance horses has received study.  Nutrition management to prevent or control midlife “metabolic syndrome” issues has led to a large number of new feeds on the market.  Still forage is what drives the healthy ration for most horses.  The doctors at Kulshan have studied these issues and know their importance to keeping your horse healthy and productive.  We use laboratory services to analyze feeds so we can help you provide a balanced diet to your horse.  In the Northwest we typically have to closely watch energy and protein ratios, calcium and phosphorus ratios, and the levels of copper, zinc, selenium, and vitamin E in our diets.  The healthy, productive horse is closely linked to the diet it consumes.

Basic Nutrition Tip #1:  All feeds for horses must be free from molds and dust!  Dusty or moldy feeds can cause colic or allergic lung reactions in your horse.  Be sure to monitor and remove any feed that is moldy or dusty.
